Chain Link Privacy Slats

PVC Privacy Slats

Both Bottom Locking and Top Locking PVC privacy slats are vertical, flat‑tubular inserts designed to provide roughly 75% privacy for chain link fencing. They’re manufactured from UV‑stabilized HDPE and available in a wide range of colors. Bottom Lock slats secure into a horizontal V‑shaped channel installed at the base of the mesh, while Top Lock slats use notched holes near the top that accept a flexible locking channel to create a clean, straight upper edge. Both systems offer a durable, easy‑to‑install, long‑lasting way to increase privacy and improve the appearance of chain link fencing.

PVC Privacy Slats — Key Characteristics

•     Privacy & Appearance — Provides approximately 75%–88% visual blockage with a clean, uniform look.
•     Installation — Slats slide vertically into place after installing the bottom or top locking channel.
•     Compatibility — Designed for 2", 2‑1/4", and 2‑1/2" mesh sizes commonly found in 8, 9, and 11 gauge chain link.
•     Durability — UV inhibitors resist fading; material withstands salt air, sand, road dirt, and most acids.

Bottom Lock — Key Characteristics

•     Design — Flat‑tubular profile with V‑notched bottoms.
•     Locking Mechanism — A patented horizontal V‑track installs in the bottom diamonds of the mesh and securely holds the slats in place, preventing movement or slippage.

Top Lock — Key Characteristics

•     Design — Flat‑tubular profile with notched holes along the edges near the top.
•     Locking Mechanism — A flexible horizontal channel threads through the top holes to lock the slats together and create a straight, uniform top line.

Aluminum Privacy Slats

Aluminum privacy slats are thin, flexible aluminum ribbons—roughly the thickness of copy paper—woven diagonally through the chain‑link mesh to create a dense, low‑airflow privacy screen. They are not rigid; the chain‑link fabric itself forms the structure. The mesh creates two diagonal paths, one deeper than the other, and the slats are laid into the deeper diagonal on every single run. When installed correctly, aluminum slats create a long‑lasting, uniform appearance with excellent color stability in Florida’s salt air.

Aluminum Slats — Key Characteristics

•     Material — Thin aluminum ribbon, easily creased if mishandled before installation.
•     Privacy — Very low airflow; the chain‑link fabric fills the small gaps between slats.
•     Appearance — Available in solid colors or mixed patterns (historically used for red‑white‑blue runs, camouflage blends, and other decorative layouts).
•     Longevity — Excellent resistance to UV, salt air, and weathering; does not fade, chalk, or become brittle.

Installation Notes (Real‑World Best Practice)

•     Diagonal Weave — Slats are laid into the deeper diagonal of the chain‑link pattern on every run.
•     Cross‑Locking — Every six diamonds, a second aluminum ribbon is woven over the laid slats and under the fabric wire. This cross‑threading locks the entire field in place.
•     Top Termination — The slat should be folded over the bottom of the top diamond with enough length to tuck behind the next row of diamonds.
•     Bottom Termination — The diagonal run ends by folding the slat around the bottom of the third row of diamonds from the ground.
•     Wind Resistance — Proper folding and cross‑locking are essential; simply bending the small factory tabs is not sufficient and will allow wind to knock slats loose.
•     Handling — Slats crease permanently if bent sharply before installation; creased pieces are best used where the diagonal pattern climbs a corner and requires shorter cut lengths.
•     Cutting — The ideal tool for trimming aluminum slats is a pair of Wiss inlaid 1225 scissors, which cut cleanly without deforming the ribbon.
